Using your smart Kangaroo

In early 2014 as part of a continuing investment in Nottingham’s transport infrastructure, we will be introducing new ticketing technology across the bus, tram and rail network. This will mean that the way you use your Citycard to travel on buses, trams and trains will change. Information about how your new card will work is detailed below.

How your new Kangaroo works

Your new Kangaroo will require you to "touch on" to the transport system when you travel on any bus, train or tram. To do this, simply hold your card against the reader.

You do not need to touch off with your Kangaroo, unless you’re travelling by train from a station that does not have a card reader. If you’re travelling by train from a station without a card reader then you must touch off if there is a card reader when you alight.

Please note that failure to touch on (or off if by rail) may result in you having to pay a fine or penalty fare. We recommend that you keep your Citycard separate from any other contactless cards you may have, such as bank cards, Mango, Genie or Easyrider, so that the data doesn’t become corrupt.

Touch on the bus

If you're travelling by bus, you need to touch on when you board. You do this by putting your card against the card reader. When this is successful you will see a green light displayed on the card reader.

Touch on the tram

If you're travelling by tram, you need to touch on before you board. You can do this at either one of the platform validators or ticket machines. You touch on by putting your card against the card reader. When this is successful you will see a green light displayed on the reader.

Touch on the train

If you're travelling by train, you need to touch on at the station wherever there is a validator or gate. Due to the nature of the rail network there may not be a validator or gate at the station at which you start your journey. If you cannot touch on at the station where you start your journey, you should touch off at the station where you complete your journey.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the card reader turns red?

If the card reader shows a red light it means your Touch in has been declined. You should firstly check your balance or ticket.

If you believe you have a valid ticket you should contact the Citycard customer support (0115) 876 2700 or visit one of our travel centres. Please note that staff on the bus, tram or train do not have access to your balance or personal information.

If your Touch in is declined before you board the train or tram then you must not board.

There's no machine to touch on before I board the train. What should I do?

We won't have card readers installed at all stations within the Kangaroo boundary. Where there isn't a machine before you board, you must always touch off at the station when you alight. Failure to do this may result in a penalty fare or fine.

Can I top up my Citycard at one of the ticket machines?

No – At the moment you can only top up your Citycard at the Broadmarsh and Victoria Travel Centres (Victoria travel centre will be open from the end of April 2014). We’ll be adding more locations throughout the next 12 months including online, on street kiosks and over 150 Payzone locations.
